The arrival of a new foal is an exciting time for the horse owner. This is also the opportune time to begin long term hoof care and maintenance on your new addition. At birth you should take the time to give the hooves an examination to check for any abnormalities. I will take this opportunity to slightly shape the new foal’s hooves with a sanding block. For the first four weeks after birth I will check the hooves every other day to check for deformities in the hoof capsule.
